Results 1 - 100 for Adam US $40m Sire Smarty Jones May Move To Pennsylvania
US 2004 Champion 3YO male & dual classic winner Smarty Jones (Elusive Quality-I'll Get Along, by Smile) "could be relocating to Pennsylvania for the 2011 season," reported The Philadelphia Daily News. The 2004 Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner has stood 6 seasons at Three Chimneys Farm in Kentucky (initially for US$100,000) after his late owner Roy Chapman sold breeding rights in the colt in a US$40 million deal. On the track, Smarty Jones scored victories in 2004's Gr1 Kentucky Derby, Gr1 Preakness Stakes & Gr1 Arkansas Derby among 8 wins & a runner-up (in the Gr1 Belmont Stakes) from 9 starts for US$7,613,155 earnings. Although currently a Top 10 US 3rd-crop sire, Smarty Jones "has yet to come close to mirroring his track success at stud, results which were reflected in his 2010 fee of US$10,000" commented racingpost.com. Three crops & 250 foals of racing age have produced 5 stakes-winners led by US Gr2 scorer Backtalk; another runner, Keiai Gerbera has earned over US$1million in Japan "prompting sustained interest from Japanese farms". However Chapman's widow Pat (who owns half the 60 shares in the stallion with her family) "is adamant Smarty Jones will never leave the US; instead the family "is keen the stallion relocates to Pennsylvania (where he was bred & raised) subject to approval of the 20 other shareholders in the stallion".

Myboycharlie Arrives At Vinery
Meanwhile Irish-bred 5YO stallion & Gr1-winning 2007 French Champion Juvenile Myboycharlie (Danetime-Dulceata, by Rousillon) arrived at in Scone on Wednesday, in time to begin serving his 2nd southern hemisphere season on September 1. Vinery's Adam White commented: “We’ve not seen Myboycharlie since he was here last season, but you can see what a change there has been in the horse even in that time. He has let down into a lovely horse which would suggest that he enjoys being a stallion & copes well with the work rate & the travelling. We were very pleased to see him cover so many mares last season (94) in light of the fact that he wasn't announced as joining the Vinery roster until the very eve of the season. And he subsequently returned 98% of mares in-foal from his initial Northern Hemisphere season at the English National Stud. That really is quite a phenomenal figure.”

New York Lawmakers Approve US$25m Loan To NYRA
In the US, New York State lawmakers approved a US$25 million loan for the NY Racing Association "keeping the racetrack operator solvent for at least the rest of the year & avoiding a threatened shutdown of its operations after Gr1 Belmont Stakes on June 5" reported bloodhorse.com. Senator Eric Adams (chairman of the Senate racing committee) commented: "It's more than just jockeys on a horse going around a track. There's an entire, multi-billion dollar industry of racing in New York that not only New Yorkers depend on, but people outside the state as well." NYRA had warned it will run out of money in June & last week sent 60-day lay-off warning notices to its 1,300 employees. However Governor David Paterson's administration "hopes to award a new agreement for the long-stalled Aqueduct casino sometime in early August". A memo accompanying the NYRA borrowing states: "Enactment will provide a bridge until VLT (video lottery terminal) revenues are in place (at the Aqueduct casino) to fund NYRA's operating & capital expenses.”

WA Owner Peters Takes Horses From Durrant Stable
Prominent West Australian owner-breeders Bob & Sandra Peters "have parted company" with premiership-leading trainer Adam Durrant & "moved 7 of their gallopers from Durrant's Karnup stables on Sunday," reported The West Australian. The Peters-Durrant combination "proved a formidable team in distance racing" which "peaked with Lords Ransom's win in the Gr2 Perth Cup in January"; Lords Ransom also won December's Gr2 Cox Plate (2100m), as well as 2008's Listed Pinjarra Cup (2400m) & Listed Bunbury Cup (2200m), plus 2007's Listed Belmont Classic (2200m), while stable-mate stayer Star Encounter won 2009's Listed Pinjarra Cup (2200m). Bob Peters confirmed Lords Ransom will "return to Victoria for his next campaign" & Star Encounter is "in training with young Warrnambool trainer Jarrod McLean". Another former Durrant-trained galloper Jewelled is "now with Bill & Symon Wilde at their Terang racecourse training complex". Peters said the other gallopers would be "split between his 4 existing WA trainers" Jim Taylor, Graeme Ballantyne, Ivan Haggerty & Brent Larsson. Peters said the split was "amicable" & there was no rift between the 2 men. Durrant added: "I have new clients into the stable who have babies coming along & I want to concentrate on them. There was an uncertainty about whether Bob's horses would come back & it was hard to hold up on positions when I had clients wanting to put horses in training. The deal was amicable & there are no hard feelings." Durrant (who took over from his father Geoff 6 years ago) currently leads the Perth trainers' premiership with 45 city wins (10 wins clear of Jim Taylor).

Qld Racing-Gold Coast Dispute Over Magic Millions Raceday
managing director David Chester "is adamant next year's sales & race day will be held on the Gold Coast despite Queensland Racing failing to allocate the meeting a date in its draft calendar," reported racenet.com.au. Chester's assurance followed a report in The Gold Coast Bulletin which declared: "The Gold Coast Turf Club has not been allocated a race meeting on Magic Millions day, tentatively stripping the city of the lucrative $60 million carnival. In a shock revelation, Queensland Racing did not assign the January 15 Magic Millions meeting in its draft list of race dates for next season because of an impasse with the Gold Coast Turf Club board. . . . . The move comes as Magic Millions bosses continue to meet the Victorian Government about proposals to run the event at Flemington as early as next year & relations between QR & the turf club sour over a proposed redevelopment of the track." QR chairman Bob Bentley told the newspaper: "The date has been held open at this stage. . . . . we want it held at the Gold Coast - most definitely. It's a Gold Coast event & that's where we want it to stay, but we've got to work through the issues." The newspaper added: "It is understood Magic Millions, which wants the turf club to accept a potential $75 million upgrade deal with Queensland Racing, are furious the club continues to hold out & not accept the terms. The GCTC board last month voted not to enter any agreement unless they were the major equity holder of the site." Meanwhile Chester emphasised: "I can categorically say the Magic Millions meeting will be held on the Gold Coast in 2011 in accordance with the final year of our contract. We are contractually obligated to run the race at the Gold Coast next year, but we haven't signed an agreement past that year. Although we haven't signed the new deal, I am extremely confident a new contract will be signed for the years after 2011." Chester confirmed the "more pressing issue is the dispute between the Gold Coast Turf Club & Queensland Racing over a proposed $75 million upgrade of the track & facilities". Chester summed up: "The Gold Coast track really needs an upgrade. Southern trainers won't bring their horses to race at the carnival because of the state of the track & facilities. The Queensland government is behind Magic Millions, as is Queensland events & Queensland Racing. It brings a benefit of $52 million a year to the economy up here." racenet.com.au commented: "It is believed Queensland Racing is reluctant to fund the project with taxpayers' money unless they took a major equity interest in the Gold Coast site."

Tinkler Advocates Racing Funds From Stallion Revenue
Nathan Tinkler is also "adamant the racing industry needs to explore & develop new income streams & not be so reliant on TAB turnover," reported The Daily Telegraph. "I think racing needs to have a good look at itself," he declared. "Everyone looks at TAB turnover & says we have to have a bigger slice of it so we can fund racing, but everyone seems to ignore the dollars that go out of the breeding industry. I'd like to see some avenue in place so racing can access that revenue stream. Maybe we should look at putting 5% of stallion revenue each year to the industry." (Mar 6)

Bartley Eyes Dubai Target For Sniper’s Bullet
Trainer Tracey Bartley “has revealed plans to campaign Sniper's Bullet overseas following his devastating wins in the Railway & Kingston Town Stakes in Perth,” reported The Daily Telegraph. The 6YO gelding Sniper's Bullet (Bite The Bullet-Yallah Terrace, by Yallah Prince) notched his 2nd successive Gr1 win in a fortnight with victory in Saturday’s Gr1 Kingstown Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot following his win in the Gr1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at Ascot on November 21; overall he now boasts 8 wins (also including 2007’s Gr1 Stradbroke Handicap over 1400m at Eagle Farm) & 13 placings from 34 starts for $2,429,225 earnings. Bartley confirmed: “It's a whole new ball game now, we can think about the longer races. Damien Oliver (jockey) was adamant he would run 2000m.” Among the options Bartley will consider is Dubai’s Gr1 Dubai Duty Free (1777m) at Nad Al Sheba on March 27, following a Melbourne autumn campaign. Sniper's Bullet will leave Perth today & “head to Melbourne where he will be spelled for up to a month before being prepared for the Gr1 Futurity Stakes (1600m) at Caulfield on February 27. Bartley added: “If he's going super (after the Futurity), we might have a look at that race in Dubai over 1777m or press on to the Gr1 Australian Cup over 2000m. A couple of guys said I should think about the race in Dubai & they might be right. He'd be up running in the first three & they don't seem to be able to run them down over there.”

Is Sea The Stars "Best Racehorse of All Time"?
Following last weekend's 6th successive Gr1 victory of the season by boom Irish-bred 3YO colt Sea The Stars (Cape Cross-Urban Sea, by Miswaki) in France's Gr1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Time magazine reporter Adam Smith declared: "Man o'War in the 1920s. Phar Lap in the 1930s. Secretariat in the 1970s. The debate over horse racing's greatest ever flat runner just got hotter. Sea the Stars might just be the greatest of them all." However thoroughbredtimes.com bloodstock editor John Sparkman cautions: "It is often all too easy to over-rate any given champion in the immediate aftermath of a stunning, obviously brilliant performance, especially among younger observers, whose first-hand experience of champions of previous eras may be non-existent. Older observers (like the author), whose creakier joints tend to be accompanied by crankier minds, conversely, may tend to underrate current performers compared with the remembered glories of their all-too-distant youth. That is where a long-established rating system like the English-based Timeform service performs such a valuable service." Kadyrov "Makes No Secret Of Violent Past"
Irish-bred 5YO entire Mourilyan (Desert Prince-Mouramara, by Kahyasi) is currently among the early Melbourne Cup favourites following a 3-lengths victory in last month's UK Listed Windflower March Stakes (14 furlongs) at Goodwood to take his records to 5 wins & 7 placings (including July's UK Gr2 Goodwood Cup over 16 furlongs, plus both 2008's UK Gr3 September Stakes over 12 furlongs at Kempton & UAE Gr3 Dubai City Of Gold over 2400m at Nad Al Sheba) from 18 starts. However when Mourilyan ran at Dubai's prestigious World Cup racing meet in March, "an exiled Chechnyan political opponent was gunned down hours before the race & the assassin left a gold-plated handgun as a calling card," reported The Sunday Age. Dubai police chief Dahi Khalfan Tamim "has named Kadyrov's cousin & right-hand man Adam Delimkhanov as the person who ordered the hit (a charge he denies)". As well as that death, in the past year Kadyrov "has also been linked to the slaying of human rights worker Natalya Estemirova (abducted & shot while investigating government militias) & the assassination of Kadyrov's former bodyguard Umar Israilov, who was shot in Vienna". Israilov had filed papers at the European Court Of Human Rights & told The New York Times Kadyrov "shot into the feet of prisoners & gave them electric shocks for his entertainment"; he also claimed to have witnessed Kadyrov "ordering the murder of many opponents". While Kadyrov has denied involvement in recent murders, "he makes no secret of his violent past": in 2005, he told Russian GQ magazine: "I've already killed who I should have killed. And I will kill all of those standing behind them, as long as I myself am not killed or jailed. I will be killing as long as I live."

UK Council Wants Racing Back At Great Leighs
Chelmsford Borough Council announced horse racing "should return to Great Leighs" (which opened in April 2008 as the 1st completely new racecourse in Britain for 80 years, but closed its doors under an avalanche of debts in January 2009) reported racingpost.com. Speculation "had been gathering momentum that with no fixtures possible until at least 2011, the land may be sold off for housing," but Chelmsford Council (the local authority responsible for planning) "was adamant it will block any application for a change of use". The council's communications manager Shannon Abbott emphasised: "We are committed to racing returning to Great Leighs at some stage." The site (near Braintree in Essex) is in the hands of administrators Deloitte following the collapse of the racecourse company with debts of £24 million (A$47m).

Mixed Response To UK "Racing For Change" Plan
Also in the UK, officials at Doncaster & Sandown race courses "which could have major meetings marginalised under the Racing For Change project, would accept the radical amendments for the greater good of the industry, but the plans were not welcomed by everyone involved in racing," reported racingpost.com. Among proposals "to take British racing to a new audience" are the creation of a "new flat-season championship to run from mid-April to late September & bringing forward the finale of the jumps season". In the case of Doncaster, "premierisation" of the calendar to create a new flat-season championship "would mean the Lincoln & November Handicaps falling outside that parameter"; similarly, ending the jumps season with the Grand National meeting at Aintree "would take much of the gloss off Sandown's Gold Cup day at the end of April". Doncaster managing director Adam Waterworth commented: "If it is demonstrated that a new flat-season championship would be for the good of the industry, we are not going to sit & snipe from the sidelines about the negative impact on one particular racecourse." And Jockey Club Racecourses (owner of Cheltenham, Aintree & Sandown) communications director John Maxse emphasised the Sandown management team was "able to see the bigger picture", noting: "Simon Bazalgette (Jockey Club chief executive who sits on the RFC project board) & myself have spoken to David Mackinnon (Sandown managing director) recently & he is fully aware of the proposal of possibly ending the jumps season at Aintree. The Jockey Club as an organisation is wholly supportive of the objectives laid out by the Racing For Change board." However champion jumps trainer Paul Nicholls "is not convinced another proposal, for qualifying races for the Cheltenham Festival, is a good idea" & declared: "My immediate thought is that as jumps racing is so good & healthy, if it ain't broke don't fix it." Meanwhile the betting industry "has given a cautious welcome to the Racing For Change strategy of developing a pro-active relationship with bookmakers", with William Hill director of racing David Hood commenting: "What racing has to do is recognise that it is first & foremost a betting product. That is why we welcome the commitment in the report to maximise the appeal of racing to the betting public. But - and it is a big 'but' - we question why there has not been much more involvement of the bookmaking industry in this process at a senior level."

Budget Changes To "Loss Provisions" Affect Horse Industry
Changes to the "non-commercial loss" provisions in this week's Federal Budget will have a "direct, adverse effect on the horse industry because those individuals affected by the changes may be forced to extract themselves & their investment from the horse industry" commented Adam Tims at equine financial advisers Stable Financial. Tims declared: "For high salary & wage earners ($250,000+) the Federal Government is basically saying: stick to your day job!"

Aust Sporthorse Sale At Magic Millions
Traditional thoroughbred sale company announced it will conduct the inaugural Australian Sporthorse Sale on the Gold Coast over 3 days on August 13-15, offering for public auction horses from 6 major equestrian disciplines: Showjumping, Dressage, Polo, Eventing, Showhorse & Endurance. The committee working across selections & promotion for the sale includes the leading industry professionals: Showjumping Adam Mellers (Selections) & Vicki Roycroft (Promotion); Dressage Brett Parbery (Selections & Promotion); Polo Ginger Hunt (Selections & Promotion); Eventing Tim Boland (Selections & Promotion); Showhorse Kim Durante (Selections & Promotion); & Endurance Peter Toft (Selections & Promotion). Magic Millions managing director David Chester noted: "Over the years Magic Millions sales have been well supported by the performance horse industry, with investors buying horses off the racetrack or well-bred yearlings & mares to incorporate into their discipline & breeding programs. Magic Millions has created this sale as a service to the performance horse industry: we believe it to be the first of its kind, in that we bring together various disciplines & breeders in the one sale. Over the years we have privately supplied many performance & riding horses to the Asia Pacific region & believe it will be beneficial to the industry if our international buyers can compete at an auction where they have a variety of horses to choose from & can inspect them prior." Equestrian Australia chief executive Franz Venhaus added: "Equestrian Australia welcomes this initiative by Magic Millions & supports the concept. Australia's sport horse breeding & performance sector has made great progress & this inaugural Magic Millions Sporthorse sale is a good opportunity to present to the international market."

Maryland Laws To Control Pimlico & Preakness
Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley introduced legislation to allow state control of Pimlico Race Course, Laurel Park, Bowie Training Center & the Preakness Stakes from the Maryland Jockey Club (all of which are owned by Magna Entertainment Corp, which filed for bankruptcy last month). The legislation "was prompted by news that a developer was interested in razing Pimlico & turning the property into a shopping mall," reported The Baltimore Sun. O'Malley spokesman Shaun Adamec told the newspaper the bill was designed to "expand the tools available to the state to ensure that the Preakness remains in Maryland."

100-1 Shot Mon Mome Wins UK Grand National
In the UK, French-bred 100-1 outsider Mon Mome (Passing Sale-Etoile Du Lion, by New Target) blitzed his rival by 12-lengths in the world's most famous jumping race, the £900,000 (A$1.87m) Gr1 Grand National Steeplechase (4.5 miles) at Aintree. The 9YO gelding Mon Mome (ridden by Liam Treadwell for trainer Venetia Williams) travelled amid the back half of the field for much of the run, but burst though around the final turn to flash past at least 10 other runners & then race away to defeat last year's winning Irish-bred Comply Or Die (Old Vic-Madam Madcap, by Furry Glen) & fellow French-bred My Will (Saint Preuil-Gleep Will, by Cadoudal). The winner (who finished 10th last year) equalled the record for longest-priced victory in the 162 years of the historic race (with 1967 winner Foinavon) & Venetia Williams became only the 2nd woman to train the winner (after Jenny Pitman with Royal Athlete in 1995); as a jockey, Williams famously broke her neck in her only ride in this race at the legendary Becher's Brook jump.

Maybe we should look at putting 5% of stallion revenue each year to the industry."
