Winter Stakes Success May Delay Forensics Stud Plan
Triple Gr1-winning 4YO mare Forensics (Flying Spur-Prove It, by Dehere) "could delay her retirement to stud by 12 months if she performs well in the Gr1 Tattersall's Winter Stakes at Eagle Farm" this weekend, reported The Courier-Mail. Darley Australia manager Henry Plumptre said "plans for Forensics were in the balance" & confirmed: "She is booked to be covered by Street Cry this spring, but we might put that on hold for a year if she ran well in the Winter Stakes. Of course a start still is very dependent on the weather. There is no way she will run on a wet track. Her whole autumn & winter campaigns have been totally disrupted by the weather. Her 1st-up run was on dead ground & she finished a good 2nd in the Gr2 Canterbury Stakes (over 1300m at Rosehill in Sydney in March). Then she struck a heavy track in the Gr1 Queen Of The Turf & slow in the Gr1 All-Aged Stakes & clearly wasn't comfortable. We're giving thought to another season on the track, because she is a sound mare who has started only 18 times. There is easily another Gr1 in her if she keeps racing." Forensics (a $900,000 yearling purchased by Woodlands Stud & consigned by at the 2006 Easter Sale in Sydney) currently has 7 wins (including 2008's Gr1 Myer Classic over 1600m at Flemington, Gr1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes over 1550m at Canterbury Park, Gr2 Golden Rose over 1400m at Rosehill & Gr2 Light Fingers Stakes over 1200m at Randwick, as well as 2007's Gr1 Golden Slipper over 1200m at Rosehill & Gr3 Kindergarten Stakes over 1100m at Warwick Farm) & 2 placings (also including 2008's Gr2 Theo Marks Stakes over 1300m at Rosehill) from 18 starts for $3,525,500 earnings.

Qld Racing Buys Wadham Park & Vet Hospital
Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley announced the purchase of the Wadham Park equine training complex & veterinary hospital at Beaudesert south of Brisbane. The 66 hectares of flood-free land includes a 2200m grass track, 2000m grass track, 2000m synthetic track, 1400m sand track, sand rolls & round yards, a 50m swimming pool, a 75m swimming pool, 2 aqua walkers, 3 8-horse walkers & 2 16-horse walkers. Bentley commented: "Wadham Park will ensure South-East Queensland has up-to-date training facilities to accommodate continued expansion of the racing industry. This new initiative will take pressure off existing facilities at the Gold Coast, Beaudesert & Deagon, which are currently overtaxed & in less than optimal condition. The contract to purchase Wadham Park follows the recent decision to approve the newly formed Brisbane Racing Club's application to build on-course stables at Eagle Farm. The BRC's decision on balance will be sufficient to accommodate the metropolitan training needs. It is expected that Wadham Park, when fully developed, will provide stabling & training facilities for 700 horses & will provide a huge employment boost to this area of Queensland. QR will develop a 5-year plan to fully develop this facility & will provide Queensland with a training centre equivalent to what is currently enjoyed by the Victorian racing industry. In addition it is QR's intention to establish Wadham Park as the Queensland industry's training centre to ensure that modern, professional, scientific skills are delivered to a new generation of industry workers in addition to the accommodation of 700 horses on site. Wadham Park is ideally situated, being in close proximity to the regional high schools of Beaudesert, Boonah, Canungra & Jimboomba. These schools are already providing a comprehensive agricultural curriculum, but lack dedicated facilities to complement the students' enthusiasm for the industry in providing future horse technicians, trackwork riders & jockeys. The securing of Wadham Park will allow the transfer of QR's already successful training department to take advantage of this exceptional resource base." Bentley anticipates the handover will take place on July 1 & "it is intended to have each facility up-and-running as soon as possible".

European Star Spotlights NZ Windsor Park Dam
In New Zealand, last weekend's victory by 3YO colt Eagle Mountain (Rock Of Gibraltar-Masskana, by Darshaan) against older horses in Ireland's Gr2 Royal Whip Stakes (10 furlongs) at The Curragh (following his runner-up in the Gr1 English Derby in June & 3rd in the Gr1 Irish Derby in July) provided major excitment at Windsor Park Stud, which owns Eagle Mountain's half-sister Guinevere (Fairy King-Masskana) in partnership with Auckland businessman John Thompson. Windsor Park boss Nelson Schick noted: "When we bought Guinevere, little did we realise what a significant broodmare her dam Masskana was going to turn out to be. Guinevere was Masskana's 1st foal & she has since produced 3 stakes-winners including 2YO Gr1 winner Sulk & now Eagle Mountain." Eagle Mountain adds further lustre to a family developed by The Aga Khan which has also produced Gr1 French 1000 Guineas winner Masarika. Guinevere's yearling filly (by Windsor Park's champion NZ sire of the last 6 seasons Volksraad) sold at this year's NZ Bloodstock Karaka Premier Sale for NZ$300,000; she also has a Thorn Park colt to be offered at the Karaka Premier Sale next January; & she is due to foal again to Volksraad.
