Results 1 - 14 for Balmont US Gr1-Winner Eskendereya To Stud At Taylor Made
In the US, this season's dominant Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes-winning 3YO colt Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway-Aldebaran Light, by Seattle Slew) "who was injured as he prepared for the Gr1 Kentucky Derby, will begin his stud career in 2011 at Taylor Made Stallions in Kentucky," reported thoroughbredtimes.com. Jess Jackson (who purchased "an undisclosed amount" of Eskendereya from Ahmed Zayat as a stallion prospect) enthused: "Eskendereya was widely considered to be the best of his generation. He has a royal pedigree & beautiful conformation. His pedigree contains many of the top sires of the past 50 years & is noteworthy for quality, depth & stamina. His female pedigree, top & bottom, is a 6x6x6x6 to Almahmoud, one of the greatest progenitors of standing sires in America." Eskendereya (a half-brother to UK Gr1-winning WA Lynward Park Stud shuttler Balmont) was early favourite for the Kentucky Derby when withdrawn on April 25 "with what turned out to be a soft tissue injury to his left front leg" & was retired from racing on May 7. Eskendereya won all 3 of his starts as a 3YO, including the Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes by 8.5-lengths & Gr1 Wood Memorial by 9.75-lengths. He also won the Listed Pilgrim Stakes as a 2YO & overall notched 4 wins from 6 starts for US$725,700 earnings. Taylor Made Stallions president Duncan Taylor declared: "After witnessing Eskendereya's incredible performances in the Wood Memorial & Fountain Of Youth, we truly believe he is the most talented racehorse to go to stud in years. He possesses a rare blend of speed, stamina & pedigree that you rarely find in today's thoroughbred. In looking at his pedigree, which traces directly back to the female family of Northern Dancer & Halo, you will find numerous breed-shaping stallions & foundation mares in virtually every position throughout his pedigree."

Irish Studmaster Billy Iceton Dies Aged 81
In Ireland overnight, renowned County Meath-based stud master Billy Iceton died aged 81 "after a long illness" reported racingpost.com. In the late 1940s, Iceton (a long-term member of the Curragh committee) moved from his native Britain to oversee the running of the Tara Estate in County Meath (where Hubert Hartigan had trained for the Aga Khan) for its new owner Clifford Nicholson & remained at the helm until only a few years ago "when illness meant he had to relinquish the running of the stud to his son Derek". The stud is currently home to 3 stallions: Balmont, Dilshaan & Key Of Luck. Among the notable racehorses bred at Tara Stud & Limestone Stud (its sister operation in Lincolnshire) was Star Way "later a highly influential sire in Australasia".

1st Winner For Lynward Park Shuttler Balmont
WA Lynward Park shuttler & UK Gr1-winning 9YO stallion Balmont (Stravinsky-Aldebarran Light, by Seattle Slew) sired his 1st winner when 2YO filly Danube Dancer (Balmont-Green Danube, by Irish River) scored at the 2nd time of asking at Warwick (5.5 furlongs) in England. Balmont, who has shuttled between Tara Stud in Ireland & Western Australia's Alwyn Park for the past 2 seasons, will stand at Bullsbrook-based Lynward Park in 2010 for $7,150. Balmont is a half-brother to this year's boom US 3YO colt Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway-Aldebaran Light) who thrashed his rivals by 8.5-lengths in the Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes (9 furlongs) at Gulfstream Park & then by 9.75-lengths in the Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes (9 furlongs) at Aqueduct to become favourite for last weekend's Gr1 Kentucky Derby, before a minor leg injury forced his shock withdrawal (and subsequent retirement) in the week leading up to the Churchill Downs Classic.

Kentucky Derby Fav Is Half-Brother To Shuttler Balmont
The sensational weekend victory by boom US 3YO colt Eskendereya (Giant's Causeway-Aldebaran Light, by Seattle Slew) in thrashing his rivals by 9.75-lengths in the Gr1 Wood Memorial Stakes (9 furlongs) at Aqueduct in New York (& immediately jumping to favouritism for next month's Gr1 Kentucky Derby) provided a major pre-breeding season boost for his Gr1-winning 9YO half-brother Balmont (Stravinsky-Aldebaran Light) who is shuttling to Alwyn Park in Western Australia (from Tara Stud in Ireland) for his 3rd season "down under". At his previous start, Eskendereya similarly blitzed his rivals by 8.5-lengths in February's Gr2 Fountain Of Youth Stakes (9 furlongs) at Gulfstream Park in Miami in Florida & overall now boasts 4 wins (also including 2009's Listed Pilgrim Stakes over 8 furlongs at Belmont Park) & a runner-up from 6 starts for US$725,700 earnings. Meanwhile Balmont's oldest progeny are yearlings of 2010 in Ireland. Balmont (closely-related to Gr1 Kentucky Derby winner Cannonade & leading sire Halo on his dam side) won both the UK Gr1 Middle Park Stakes & UK Gr2 Gimcrack Stakes as a 2YO, & later added Gr1-placings in both the UK July Cup & UK Golden Jubilee Stakes.
