Darci Brahma NZ$30k Heads Oaks 2007 Roster
The 5-time Gr1-winning 1st-season stallion Darci Brahma (Danehill-Grand Echezeaux, by Zabeel) "has attracted overwhelming support from breeders in both Australia & NZ & his book is already full," reported NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. However The Oaks Stud's general manager Rick Williams confirmed that "if a top-quality broodmare came along, then the possibility still existed for a booking". Darci Brahma (a $1.1 million yearling at the NZ Bloodstock 2004 National Sales series at Karaka) is standing at The Oaks Stud in 2007 for NZ$30,000+GST. Also on The Oaks Stud roster:
  • Spartacus (Danehill-Teslemi, by Ogygian) will remain at NZ$8,000+GST; he will have his initial 2YO runners in the new season. Spartacus had a strong yearling sales series in 2007 at Karaka, where he finished 2nd leading 1st-season sire with an overall average of NZ$79,174 & a top price of NZ$250,000.
  • Bachelor Duke (Miswaki-Gossamer by Seattle Slew) will stand at NZ$7,000+GST; he won the Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas & is from the family of Fairy King, Nureyev & Sadler's Wells. His 1st northern hemisphere-crop foals sold up to NZ$270,000 at the UK Tattersalls Foal Sale & the 1st NZ-born weanlings by Bachelor Duke will be on parade at the Waikato Thoroughbred Breeders' Weanling Walk on May 19.
  • Traditionally (Mr Prospector-Personal Ensign, by Private account) will stand at NZ$6,000+GST (down from NZ$12,000 last year). He is a US Gr1-winner out of undefeated US champion Personal Ensign (13 wins & 8 Gr1 triumphs). His oldest crop are now 3YOs & include Chant (NZ champion 2YO filly last season); in addition, he is already the sire of 18 individual winners.
  • Keeninsky (Stravinsky-So Keen, by Jade Hunter) will stand at NZ$5,000+GST. His 1st foals are due this Spring, after he covered 103 broodmares in his 1st season at stud last year. Keeninsky was champion 2YO of his year & went on as a 3YO to win the NZ Gr1 Telegraph Handicap (1200m) at Trentham in 1min 7.55sec.

Cracking Debut Book For Al Samer
Still in Victoria, Emirates Park Stud's Victorian manager Ed Alvares has confirmed that 2006 debutant stallion Al Samer (Redoute's Choice-My Lady's Key, by Key To The Mint) served a cracking book of 123 mares last year. Bred on a Rasmussen cross of Spring Adieu (grandam of Danehill & a half-sister to Northern Dancer), Al Samer won the Gr3 Black Opal Stakes in Canberra. Among his vanquished foes during a career that netted a number of stakes placings including the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, were star gallopers Snitzel, Paratroopers, Rewaaya, Jet Spur & Falaise. Included among the mares he covered at the Diggers Rest property were Delightful Attire, a half-sister to dual Gr1 winner He's No Pie Eater, tragically put down on Monday at Randwick. In a further Rasmussen twist, Redoute's Choice (Al Samer's sire) and Delightful Attire, who was conceived in the USA, both trace to Best in Show, Broodmare of the Year in the USA in 1982. Al Samer also carries 4x3 inbreeding to the brothers His Majesty and Graustark (Ribot-Flower Bowl by Alibhai), and Alvares advises that breeders have used this connection for some very interesting matings. Several daughters of Umatilla and Hurricane Sky were also in Al Samer's initial harem with breeders keen to capitalise on their relationship with Redoute's Choice, whose dam is their half-sister. Al Samer's book also included descendants of blue hen Eight Carat, a daughter of Gr2 winner Brompton Cross, a half-sister to Gr2 winner Sir Dex, and a half-sister to Gr2 winner Khaptivaan among the many close relations to stakes winners or producers. As a result of this support Alvares is expecting a great 1st crop for Al Samer which will "allow breeders who support him in 2007 and beyond the chance to make a tidy profit." (Apr 18)

4 Oaks Mares In Foal To Soviet Star
NZ's The Oaks Stud "will shortly welcome the arrival of 4 foals by Nureyev stallion Soviet Star," reported NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Soviet Star shuttled to NZ's Haunui Farm in 1999 for 1 season (leaving progeny including Champion galloper Starcraft). Stud manager Rick Williams revealed 4 mares at The Oaks "are currently in the MAF-approved quarantine area on the property after arriving from Ireland, & all are due to foal to Soviet Star within the next fortnight". The Oaks Stud is the southern hemisphere base for exciting young stallions Spartacus (Danehill-Teslemi, by Ogygian), Traditionally (Mr Prospector-Personal Ensign, by private Account) & Bachelor Duke (Miswaki-Gossamer, by Seattle Slew), with the latter 2 stallions shuttling from Ballylinch Stud in Ireland (home to Soviet Star). Williams noted: "If you look at the success Soviet Star had from that single crop in NZ, it's just phenomenal. I was keen to stand the horse a couple of seasons ago; however given his age (Soviet Star is now 21), it was considered in his best interest to remain in Ireland & sending mares to him Southern Hemisphere-time was the next best option." As well as 4-time Gr1 winner Starcraft, Soviet Star's NZ progeny also include: Russian Pearl (winner of the NZ Gr1 Levin Classic as a 3YO, followed by the Ladies Purse at his 1st start in Hong Kong & finishing runner-up to Vengeance Of Rain in the Gr1 HK Derby); Stardane (winner of the Gr3 Hawkes Bay Guineas); Phoenix Gold (winner of the Macau Guineas); stakes-winning mare Fialnte Etoile (runner-up in the Gr1 NZ Oaks); & multiple Queensland winner Champion Star (winner of the Listed QTC Easter Cup). The Oaks purchased the mares South Carolina (by Southern Halo) & Jolie Femme (by Mark Of Esteem) at UK Tattersalls before mating them with Soviet Star; Ballylinch Stud-owned mares Solas Mo Chroi (by King's Theatre) & Colourship (by Rainbow Quest) complete the quartet. The resulting progeny "will be prepared for sale in the Southern Hemisphere by The Oaks Stud". (Sep 13)

Azamour Win Boosts Bachelor Duke
Meanwhile the form of NZ Cambridge-based The Oaks Stud's new stallion & 2004 Gr1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Bachelor Duke (Miswaki-Gossamer, by Seattle Slew) "has been franked through the subsequent performances of the place-getters in that event: Azamour & Grey Swallow," declared NZ Thoroughbred Marketing. Azamour notched his 4th Gr1 triumph (since his 2nd behind Bachelor Duke) & broke a 54-year-old course record with victory over the best field of older horses Europe could muster in England's £650,000 (A$1.56m) Gr1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes (12 furlongs) at Newbury on the weekend. Meanwhile Grey Swallow followed his 3rd to Bachelor Duke with Gr1 victories in both the Irish Derby & this year's UK Tattersalls Gold Cup. Oaks Stud general manager Rick Williams enthused: "The way Bachelor Duke swept past his rivals to win the Irish 2000 Guineas over a mile on a lightning-fast track was a performance of exceptional quality & the form to come out of that race was testimony to the class of the field he beat." Bachelor Duke started just 6 times before his career was curtailed by injury & is set to stand his 1st season in New Zealand for NZ$15,000+GST. (Jul 26)
