New Name for New Zealand Group One
New Zealand's first Group One race of the season will become known as the Gr1 Tarzino Trophy from 2017, reports theinformant.co.nz. Previously run as the Makfi Challenge Stakes, the Tarzino Trophy will be hosted by Hawke's Bay Racing at Hastings on Saturday, 2 September. Trained by Mick Price, Tarzino (Tavistock-Zarzino, by Zabeel) retired to Westbury Stud last year after a successful racing career that netted 4 wins from 14 starts and over $1.6 million in prize money. His biggest wins were as a 3YO in the Gr1 Victoria Derby and Gr1 Rosehill Guineas. He was also runner-up in the Australian Derby. "We are thrilled with the opportunity to have one of Westbury's newest stallions affiliated with the much anticipated raceday in Hawke's Bay," said Westbury Stud's General Manager Russell Warwick. "We have a long-standing history with Hawke's Bay Racing through the running of the Makfi Challenge Stakes and we are delighted to continue that partnership thanks to the Tarzino Syndicate who have generously taken sponsorship of the season's opening Group One feature."
