One of Australia’s most admired race-callers, Darren McAulley (see below race call), has brought up 40 years behind the microphone, and remains at the peak of his powers, reports rwwa.com.au. The Kalgoorlie-born and raised broadcaster was always destined for his lifelong career, one which started when he was in his mid-teens and which covered a broad canvas of calling trots, dogs and thoroughbreds to start with, as well as calling sports and reading sports news. Also a one-time postie, a barman and a DJ, McAulley’s seemingly nonchelant, evocative readings of a race are synonymous with Perth racing which has a wide following on the east coast of Australia. However, what appears as off-the-cuff commentary is the result of dedication, dilligence and an encyclopaedic knowledge of the the subject matter. Closing in on his sixties, McAulley is currently the same age as that at which legendary fellow callers John Tapp (Sydney) and Greg Miles (Melbourne) hung up their binoculars. With no intention yet of doing likewise, McAulley, who has travelled more distance around WA than most industry participants, intimated that in time he’d probably prefer to be more selective about his broadcast duties, acknowledging the endless travel is the toughest part of the job.
