  • Aquis’ Promising Young Sire Spieth Dies

    Tuesday, 19th July 2022

The team at Aquis made the unfortunate announcement that their Gr1 performed stallion Spieth (Thorn Park-Stella Livia, by Titus Livius) was “euthanised on humane grounds having suffered an injury in his box overnight.” Speaking to ANZ Bloodstock News, Aquis’ Director of Sales Jonathan Davies indicated that it was too early to give a definitive answer on what caused his death, with the vet yet to determine the exact cause. “It’s a massive blow to the farm, to the staff and for all his shareholders and supporters. Especially the day after he sired his second stakes horse, with Birdies Galore finishing second in the Listed Oaklands Plate at Morphettville on Saturday.” After winning at Listed level on the track before two consecutive, and narrow, Group 1 second placed efforts during his career, Spieth covered a strong book of 149 mares in his first season. Sitting in equal sixth position on the Leading First Season Sires’ table with six first crop winners, Spieth’s promising progeny are headlined by the stakes placed pair Jaguar Stone (Spieth-Leopard Skin by Tale of the Cat) and Birdies Galore (Spieth-Atalanta Miss by Not a Single Doubt). While his mare covering dropped in season two and three, last season the stunning looking chestnut stallion covered a quality book with 129 mares. With the Queensland based stud farm experiencing a similarly unfortunate situation a few years back with the loss of Spill The Beans (Snitzel), one hopes that the progeny of Spieth continue to highlight their ability and what a loss he was for the industry. “The horse himself was the most gentle stallion you’d ever come across. He was just a pleasure to work with and was much loved by the whole farm, especially the stallion team,” stated Davies. “He was an absolute gem of a stallion. Let’s hope he leaves a legacy of Group 1 winners and he can finally get that Group 1 next to his name.”
