  • Prowess to Be Auctioned on Gavelhouse Plus

    Monday, 22nd July 2024

Breeders will have a rare chance to secure a top trans-Tasman Group 1 winner when Prowess is auctioned on NZB's Gavelhouse Plus from August 2nd to 8th. Trained by Roger James and Robert Wellwood for a family syndicate led by Dean Skipper, the daughter of boom Rich Hill Stud sire Proisir has won eight of her 12 starts, including five consecutive black-type victories as a 3YO. Purchased for $230,000 at Karaka in 2021 from Hallmark Stud, Prowess earned over $1.65 million in prizemoney throughout her stellar career. "It's bittersweet to put her up for sale," Skipper said. "We've been incredibly fortunate to have her, and now she's ready to transition to breeding. She's in peak condition, and we planned to sell her around this time to ensure she's in the best shape for her new career." Prowess played a significant role in the rise of her sire, Proisir, whose service fee jumped from $17,500 to $70,000 after siring five Group 1 winners in the 2022-23 season, including Prowess and Legarto. Proisir's success is reflected in his recent sale averages, reaching $188,947 at Karaka 2023 and $274,444 at Karaka 2024. A full-sister to Prowess topped the Book 1 sale at $1.6 million earlier this year. Prowess made her mark early with a standout trial win and a nine-length victory at Wanganui. Her three-year-old season saw her dominate, with five major wins including the Karaka Million 3YO Classic and the Gr1 Vinery Stud Stakes in Sydney. Despite an injury-affected 4YO season, she continued to shine with victories like the Gr2 Crystal Mile. "She captured attention and even attracted new racing fans," Skipper reflected. "We're grateful to everyone who contributed to her success and excited to see her future as a broodmare."
