  • Tattersalls October Closes with Records Galore

    Monday, 21st October 2024

The 2024 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale concluded with a historic achievement, breaking the 200 million guineas turnover mark for the first time at the the conclusion of Book 4, cementing this year's sale as a landmark occasion. Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony reflected on the remarkable series, observing that even with high expectations as buyers descended on Park Paddocks before Book 1, few would have predicted the level of demand witnessed. The sales achieved outstanding clearance rates, setting a new benchmark with an 88% clearance rate in Book 1. Book 2 continued this trend, maintaining rates of 90% or above across three consecutive sessions, while Book 3's opening day matched the impressive 88% figure. Mahony attributed this success to the exceptional quality of yearlings and the unwavering support of breeders and consignors from the UK, Ireland, and other regions. Their efforts, he noted, were instrumental in attracting a global array of buyers to Newmarket, reinforcing the Tattersalls October Sale's reputation as a premier destination for elite bloodstock. While acknowledging that some market segments faced challenges, Mahony observed that demand for high-quality yearlings remained robust. The presence of new international buyers alongside longstanding participants demonstrated the sale's global reach and the enduring appeal of thoroughbred racing. It also confirmed Tattersalls' status as Europe's unrivalled source for the finest yearlings, attracting record interest and investment on an international scale.
