The 41-year-old is on a determined path to surpass the mark of 1,813 wins set by South African legend Douglas Whyte – he won 13 successive titles on the bounce – who retired from riding in 2019 and transitioned into a successful training career. Purton's journey began in Lismore, Australia, where he quickly rose through the ranks. As an apprentice, he claimed the Brisbane Jockeys' Premiership in 2003, establishing himself as a talent to watch. Moving to Sydney, he further solidified his standing as one of Australia's premier jockeys before making a career-defining move to Hong Kong in 2007 – a shift that marked the start of a new era in the city’s racing landscape. Known for his exceptional skill and relentless dedication, Purton has earned a global reputation for his technique and consistency. Since the 2016/17 season in Hong Kong, he has maintained an impressive record, securing over 100 wins each season. Beginning the 2024/25 season just 73 wins shy of Whyte’s record, Purton is steadily chipping away at the numbers, with each win bringing him closer to etching his name in the record books.
