  • Purton Eyeing All-Time Hong Kong Record

    Monday, 11th November 2024

Australian expat jockey Zac Purton is closing in on a milestone in Hong Kong racing, eyeing the all-time record for most wins, reports campaigns.hkjc.com. The 41-year-old is on a determined path to surpass the mark of 1,813 wins set by South African legend Douglas Whyte – he won 13 successive titles on the bounce – who retired from riding in 2019 and transitioned into a successful training career. Purton's journey began in Lismore, Australia, where he quickly rose through the ranks. As an apprentice, he claimed the Brisbane Jockeys' Premiership in 2003, establishing himself as a talent to watch. Moving to Sydney, he further solidified his standing as one of Australia's premier jockeys before making a career-defining move to Hong Kong in 2007 – a shift that marked the start of a new era in the city’s racing landscape. Known for his exceptional skill and relentless dedication, Purton has earned a global reputation for his technique and consistency. Since the 2016/17 season in Hong Kong, he has maintained an impressive record, securing over 100 wins each season. Beginning the 2024/25 season just 73 wins shy of Whyte’s record, Purton is steadily chipping away at the numbers, with each win bringing him closer to etching his name in the record books. On Saturday at Sha Tin, he added a double to his tally.
