  • Mr Brightside Being Aimed at Hong Kong

    Monday, 18th November 2024

Seven-time Group 1 winner Mr Brightside is gearing up for an exciting shift in focus to Hong Kong next year. The seasoned star is set to contest a traditional Melbourne autumn campaign, targeting the CF Orr Stakes, Futurity Stakes, and the All-Star Mile, before heading to Sha Tin for the prestigious Champions Mile on April 27. Co-trainer Ben Hayes, who trains alongside his brothers Will and JD, believes the timing is perfect for this international venture. “He’s seven, he’s done everything he can here in Australia and been very competitive,” Hayes explained. While a Hong Kong trip has been considered previously, domestic goals always took priority. The upcoming performance of Gr1 Toorak Handicap winner Antino in the Hong Kong Mile on December 8 will provide a valuable form guide for Lindsay Park and Mr Brightside’s owners. Antino, who finished just half a length behind Mr Brightside in the Champions Mile at Flemington, has consistently trailed the veteran champion in their recent encounters. With the retirement of Hong Kong legends like Golden Sixty, Hayes noted, “There’s a bit of an opening there – so it’s good timing.” Mr Brightside’s stellar spring included victories in the Gr1 Makybe Diva Stakes and earnings of $3.7 million, pushing his career tally to an impressive $16.3 million. With 18 wins from 40 starts and only one finish outside the top five, his consistency has been remarkable. Looking ahead, Hayes confirmed the focus will remain on races up to 1600m, with the King Charles III Stakes next spring a likely target. “He’s taken everyone on a ride. He’s a very special horse to us, and we’ve got to enjoy it,” Hayes reflected.
