  • Racing SA Pays Tribute to the Late Sam Kavanagh

    Monday, 16th December 2024

Sam Kavanagh, a respected New South Wales-based trainer, has left a profound mark on the racing industry through both his achievements and deep personal connections. His passing at 38 last Saturday, after a battle with cancer, is a solemn loss, particularly for South Australia, where his career first took root. According to racingsa.com.au, Sam inherited a passion for racing from his father, Mark Kavanagh, a Melbourne Cup-winning trainer whose expertise and success inspired Sam to carry forward the family’s legacy. Sam's career began with a strong statement when his very first runner, Meshmaker, won at Morphettville in March 2012. This milestone foreshadowed his future success, as he went on to train 95 winners and make a name for himself in the competitive world of Australian racing. Among his standout achievements were victories with Bagman, who claimed the Balaklava Cup, Tokyo City Cup, and Matrice Stakes in 2012, solidifying Sam's reputation as a skilled and respected trainer. His dedication to producing competitive racehorses reflected the Kavanagh family's enduring influence in racing circles. Beyond his professional successes, Sam was admired for his personal warmth and the strong relationships he nurtured within the racing community, as evidenced by the flood of tributes following his passing. The Kavanagh family’s commitment to racing remains steadfast. Sam's mother, Isobel, was a cornerstone of support in their endeavours, and his brother, Levi, continues the family tradition through his own training operation. Sam leaves behind his partner, Kelly, and their daughter, Sienna, along with a legacy of determination, passion, and an indelible connection to South Australian racing.
