  • Late Bloomer Scorches Past Rivals

    Wednesday, 12th February 2025

Hotinherre may have left punters sweating when she missed the start at Kilmore on Tuesday, but the late-blooming Dundeel mare more than made up for it with a breathtaking finish to claim victory on debut. The Peter Moody and Katherine Coleman-trained 4YO showed no early speed, dropping to a clear last in the field of 10 before storming home in a manner reminiscent of a top-flight backmarker. Jockey Theo Ladd revealed to racing.comthat an early setback forced a shift in tactics. “Mr Moody said to me the plan is to go forward, and if not, you’ll just have to revert to Plan B and see what happens,” he explained. After missing the kick, Ladd had no choice but to bide his time at the rear before unleashing the mare late. “She had a few problems in the gates, as you can see with the stallion chain. But hopefully, she will learn a bit from the barriers and the whole raceday experience, and if she does, we might see a better version of her again.” The daughter of Arrowfield stallion Dundeel, whose progeny were hot property at the recently concluded Inglis Sale, caught plenty of attention with her last-to-first heroics. She swooped past Bill Boulder ($7) in the final strides, while race favourite One Special Girl ($3.60) had to settle for third, a length away. Even stable representative Sebastian Murphy was taken aback by her performance in the $27,000 contest. “Well, I saw her out wide when they entered the straight, and I thought she was going to have to run on a bit because she didn’t do anything early,” he admitted. “I asked Theo before the race if she’d shown any speed in her trial, and he said she hadn’t been asked to do a lot.” Despite the slow start, Murphy believes there’s plenty more to come. “I wasn’t sure where she’d get to in the run, but her trial performance was pretty good, and it was a strong winning effort today. They always improve after their first run, so she’ll only be better for it.” Hotinherre is owned by Burnewang Pastoral North.
