The arrival of Paddington's first Southern Hemisphere foals at Windsor Park has injected fresh excitement into the New Zealand breeding scene. The four-time Group 1 winner and rising European stallion has made an immediate impression with a pair of standout foals. Rodney Schick was full of praise for both. "They have substance and quality. His own attributes are evident in his foals." The first to arrive was a chestnut colt out of The Flying Mullet, a Mastercraftsman mare from the family of Her Royal Highness and Kingsguard. "He is correct, has leg and strength. I'm thrilled with him," Schick said. The second, a brown filly from Black Queen – a half-sister to Karaka Million winner Dynastic – also impressed: "This is the mare's first foal. She has quality, is well-marked, with good bone. It is an excellent first foal." Schick noted how thrilled he was with Paddington's progeny so far, saying that while high expectations came with such a magnificent specimen, the early signs had fuelled optimism about what lies ahead. The foals are available for viewing by appointment at Windsor Park, where the stud will also parade a stellar stallion roster including Auguste Rodin, Circus Maximus, Profondo, Shamexpress, Turn Me Loose, and Vanbrugh this week. Paddington himself was a €420,000 yearling by well-hyped French stallion Siyouni, also sire of Amelia's Jewel. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Paddington developed into one of Europe's elite racehorses with four Group 1 wins from just ten starts. Those top-level victories came at a variety of tracks – The Curragh, Ascot, Sandown, and Goodwood – and demonstrated both his class and versatility. His Group 1 tally includes the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stakes, Eclipse Stakes, and Sussex Stakes, with distances ranging from a mile to ten furlongs. From a strong French Black Type family, Paddington is out of a Montjeu mare, making his presence at Windsor Park all the more fitting, given Montjeu shuttled to the very same farm in 2001 and 2002 in partnership with Coolmore.
