  • Beiwacht Stops the Clock in Gr1 Rose Rout

    Monday, 29th September 2025

History was made at Rosehill on Saturday when a blistering front-running performance turned the Golden Rose Stakes into both a stallion-making triumph and a record-breaking spectacle, according to horseracing.com.au. Godolphin's colt Beiwacht, a son of Darley stallion Bivouac, stormed clear to score by more than four lengths, leading home stablemate Wodeton and leaving favourite Tempted with minor honours in third. The victory delivered Chris Waller his fourth success in the $1 million feature and confirmed Beiwacht as a serious force at the top level. For jockey Adam Hyeronimus, who had publicly labelled the colt a risk at the 1400 metres after his runner-up finish in the Run To The Rose, the result was both vindication and relief. "I did tell everyone last start it would be a risk, and the main thing was to keep things simple. He has always had a good turn of foot, he showed that as a two-year-old in the Silver Slipper, but it's very exciting to see him put it together now," he said. The stopwatch backed that assessment, with Beiwacht carving out a new track record of 1:20.79. Waller was quick to highlight the significance of the win for both horse and rider. "It's a big thing. He's a Silver Slipper winner as a two-year-old, a Group 2 winner and now he's won a stallion-making race. To do it on his home track and in record time is fantastic," he said. The trainer was equally fulsome in his praise of Hyeronimus and Godolphin. "Adam has done a great job. He didn't panic, he got him into a lovely rhythm, and they've run time as well. It's a testament to Adam and the Godolphin team for sticking solid." For Wodeton, who chased bravely but was outgunned by his stablemate, the Caulfield Guineas looms as the next assignment. Waller indicated the mile will be the focus and that the colt deserves his own shot at Group 1 glory. Jockey James McDonald echoed that sentiment: "He was excellent, very gallant in defeat, and his day will come." Wodeton has drifted from $6 to $8 in Guineas betting, while Beiwacht has firmed sharply from $26 to $11 in pursuit of a rare Golden Rose–Caulfield Guineas double, last achieved by Vinery Stud's electric young sire, Ole Kirk, in 2020. Tempted's jockey Ethan Brown was philosophical after the beaten favourite's third placing, suggesting the filly may be better suited at a shorter trip. "She ran really well. They ran quick time, but I feel like she's probably a little more effective over 1200 metres with a hotter tempo. Still a very good effort," he said. With one colt making history and another shaping as a live chance in Melbourne, Waller's Rosehill quinella looks set to shape the spring classics over the coming weeks.
