  • Key Cups Order Changes After Saturday

    Wednesday, 8th October 2025

Momentum continues to build around the $5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) with news that two of the weekend's standout winners have been issued weight penalties ahead of the iconic staying contest scheduled for Saturday week, reports horsebetting.com.au. Fresh from a commanding Group 1 Metropolitan triumph over 2400m at Randwick, Royal Supremacy has been lifted from the limit weight of 51kg to 52.5kg following an authoritative staying performance for Ciaron Maher. Meanwhile, Valiant King earned a 1kg penalty - rising to 52kg - after producing a powerful finish from the rear in Saturday's Group 3 Bart Cummings (2500m) at Flemington, a performance that also secured him ballot exemption into the Melbourne Cup. The reassessments elevate both gallopers into the top 30 of the Caulfield Cup order of entry, now sitting 26th and 27th respectively, and both are rated $15 in early markets. Ahead of them looms the favourite, Half Yours (St  Jean), who tightened into $3.50 after a fast-closing fourth - see below - in the Turnbull Stakes. Half Yours shares the same 52.5kg impost as Royal Supremacy with significant support noted across several wagering platforms. While the Cup penalties are meaningful in a tactical sense, they don't apply to the Melbourne Cup where both horses remain on the minimum 51kg due to this year's 2kg differential between the two handicap events. Valiant King's golden ticket confirms his berth, while Royal Supremacy also advanced nine spots in the Melbourne Cup order, from 41st to 32nd, after proving himself 9kg under the weight-for-age benchmark for older males. Handicapper David Hegan was quick to point to the authority shown in the Metropolitan. Royal Supremacy "moved into the race effortlessly at the top of the straight and was too strong through the line for his rivals." The 1.5kg penalty places him just one spot behind Birdman, who carried the same impost when finishing 2.6 lengths adrift in the same event. In the Bart Cummings, Valiant King's sustained run off a strong early tempo saw him power past rivals late and win with a widening margin of 2.75 lengths, justifying his 1kg penalty and significant leap up the ballot. Both horses now loom as serious contenders in the spring's two premier staying tests, and connections will be buoyed by the fact that, despite the applied Caulfield Cup penalties, their Melbourne Cup ambitions remain unencumbered by any weight increase. Also benefiting from Saturday's results were Bart Cummings placegetters Torranzino and Gilded Water, who advanced to 48th and 50th in the Melbourne Cup order after passing the first elimination clause.
