  • Lara Antipova More Than Up for Challenge

    Monday, 22nd December 2025

Expectations were high heading into Saturday's Wakefield Challenge Stakes at Trentham, and they were not merely met but emphatically exceeded when Lara Antipova announced herself as one of the most exciting juvenile fillies seen this season. Carrying the weight of an eight-length debut demolition and a flood of late support, the Russian Revolution filly delivered a performance that confirmed her reputation rather than tested it, charging clear to land the Gr2 feature over 1100m with authority, reports NZ Racing Desk. Only 13 days removed from her debut win at Te Aroha, the Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson-trained youngster arrived at Trentham with both form and fitness on her side. Punters made their position clear, sending her out a dominant $1.20 favourite, but the race itself still required patience and precision. Craig Grylls pushed forward from the gates yet was forced to sit outside the leader when Lassified showed superior early speed. After a brief squeeze involving the inexperienced Magill, the field settled, with Lara Antipova travelling comfortably despite doing some work. The key moment came approaching the home turn. Once Grylls asked her to lengthen, the response was instant and decisive. She surged to the lead within a handful of strides and rapidly opened up a commanding break, powering away to score by 4.25-lengths and leave no doubt about her standing among the elite of her generation. The ease of the victory, combined with her professionalism under pressure, marked it as more than a routine stakes success. Bergerson was effusive afterward, particularly given the tight turnaround and travel demands. "She is a very exciting filly. She has just kept on giving the more we have asked of her," he said. He noted the significance of her composure mid-race and her adaptability in running outside the leader, adding that her ability to relax would underpin future success. The trainer also suggested that even with a more conservative ride, her acceleration would have been just as potent. Purchased earlier this year for $100,000 from Vinery Stud's Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale draft by David Ellis in partnership with Fortuna Racing, Lara Antipova represents the continuation of a fruitful alliance. That partnership has already delivered champions such as Melody Belle and high-class performers like Bellatrix Star, and Bergerson was keen to acknowledge Fortuna principal John Galvin's ongoing support. He said he was "stoked" for Galvin and hopeful the filly could continue progressing through the grades. Attention now turns to what lies ahead. The immediate plan is to give the filly a freshen-up before setting sights on late-summer and autumn targets, with the Matamata Breeders' Stakes likely to feature prominently en route to Group 1 aspirations.
