  • Inside Draw for Tron Bolt Desired by Waller

    Tuesday, 6th October 2026

Chris Waller believes the barrier draw could prove a decisive factor in Tron Bolt's attempt to add Saturday's $3 million Gr1 Caulfield Guineas over 1600m to his juvenile Gr1 record, with the champion trainer particularly keen to secure an inside gate for the talented colt. Tron Bolt travelled to Caulfield for a crucial familiarisation gallop ahead of the three-year-old classic, giving the son of Toronado an opportunity to experience the circuit before he tackles a race Waller has won in each of the past two years with Private Life and Autumn Boy. According to punters.com.au, Waller's preference for an economical draw stems from the colt's racing style and the importance of preserving energy around Caulfield, where an awkward gate can quickly force a horse to work early or cover unnecessary ground. Tron Bolt has already demonstrated his quality over the Guineas distance, winning the Gr1 J.J. Atkins Stakes over 1600m at Eagle Farm during the winter after building a record of three victories from his opening four starts, and Waller has deliberately structured his spring around allowing the colt to peak for the Caulfield assignment. His return produced a seventh placing before he progressed to the Gr1 Golden Rose, where he finished behind dominant winner Warwoven, but the rise from 1400m to 1600m is expected to bring him back onto more favourable terrain. The task remains formidable, with Golden Rose winner Warwoven arriving as the leading Sydney-trained contender and Blind Raise establishing himself as Victoria's principal hope after his emphatic 2.75l victory in the Gr3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude over 1400m. Waller also holds considerable depth in the race, with Diameter among his representatives after winning the Gr2 Stutt Stakes, while Central Europe and Somethings Burnin' have also remained in contention. Tron Bolt, however, is the stable's proven Gr1 miler and therefore brings an established qualification many of his rivals are still attempting to earn. The colt's Caulfield reconnaissance forms an important part of Waller's preparation, particularly given the tighter turns and different racing direction compared with the Sydney and Brisbane tracks on which Tron Bolt has built his reputation. An inside barrier would allow his rider to conserve ground and potentially hold a prominent position without expending unnecessary energy, exactly the scenario Waller hopes will give Tron Bolt every opportunity to reproduce his best form when he faces one of the deepest three-year-old fields assembled this spring.
